Τα δάκρυα
ποίημα  

Κι είδα στα μάτια σου τα δάκρυα να λάμπουν σαν διαμάντια.

Δώσ’ τα μου, κοριτσάκι, να στολίσω μ’ αυτά μια ζωγραφιά.

Αυτά τα όμορφα τα δάκρυα σου που αστράφτουν στα ρόδινα σου μαγουλάκια 

σε ανέβασαν σε ουρανούς, σε αιθέρες λαμπρούς κι ανεξερεύνητους,

εκεί που τα δάκρυα θα είναι χρήσιμα μόνο για να στολίζουν ζωγραφιές.

Εσύ θα τις κοιτάς εκστατικά, περήφανη για τα χρυσά σου δάκρυα.

Κι ενώ το χαρτί μέσα στον χρόνο λιώνει, θα αφήνει ανέγγιχτο το πάθος των δακρύων.

Tears

A poem

And I saw the tears in your eyes shining like diamonds.

Give them to me, little girl, so I may adorn a painting with them.

Those beautiful tears of yours, glistening on your rosy cheeks,

have lifted you to the heavens, to radiant and unexplored skies,

to a place where tears serve only to adorn paintings.

You will gaze upon them in rapture, proud of your golden tears.

And though the paper may dissolve with the passing of time, the passion of the tears will remain untouched.

Μεράκι

Ήταν θελκτικό και όμορφο, θαρρώ, εκείνο το μεράκι· το άρπαζε ο άνεμος και το γύριζε σαν ανεμοδούρα, ο ήλιος το κοίταζε ζηλιάρικα, η θάλασσα το πότιζε με αλμύρα, μούσκευε το κορμί. Κι όταν το όνειρο τελείωσε, τα μάτια, τώρα πια ξεκούραστα, άνοιξαν· το μεράκι άναψε φωτιά, γυμνό στο φως του ήλιου, φωτιά για να κάψει, φωτιά για να καεί η ψευδαίσθηση. Τώρα, κενός χώρος, άφωνος, μολυβένιος, δίχως συναίσθημα, άδειος· άνθρωποι πυκνοί, κοντοί, άλλοι σμαραγδένιοι, κάποιοι αχτένιστοι, τα μάτια τους προβάλλουν σαν σε οθόνη τα σκαλιά της αβύσσου, τις αμαρτίες του κόσμου, που συναντούν άλλες αμαρτίες, μαύρες ή λουλακιές, δείνοντας τους χαρακτήρα και ανάλογο ήθος. Πάλεψαν και παλεύουν, οι ζωντανοί τους νεκρούς αγναντεύουν στο διάβα τους, περιμένοντας τη σειρά τους.

Κι έπειτα να, το μεράκι σύντροφος, περπατά δίπλα μου, σκιά που μεγαλώνει όσο προχωρώ στο διάβα του κόσμου, ανοίγει τα πλουμιστά φτερά του και πετά σαν αέρινο στεφάνι ψηλά, πολύ ψηλά, ακολουθώντας το πικρό συναίσθημα, ανταμωμένο με γαρύφαλλα και τριαντάλλα στον κήπο της Εδέμ.

Passion

A Poem

It was alluring and beautiful, I think, that passion; the wind would seize it and spin it like a weather vane, the sun gazed at it jealously, the sea drenched it in brine, soaking the body through. And when the dream ended, the eyes—rested now—opened; the passion ignited a fire, naked in the sunlight—a fire to burn, a fire to consume the illusion. Now, an empty space—voiceless, leaden, devoid of feeling, hollow; a throng of people—stocky, short, some emerald-hued, others disheveled—whose eyes project, as if on a screen, the steps of the abyss and the sins of the world; sins that meet other sins—black or indigo—taking on character and a corresponding moral nature. They have struggled and still struggle; the living gaze upon the dead along life’s path, awaiting their own turn.

And then—look—passion becomes a companion, walking beside me; a shadow that lengthens as I journey through the world, spreading its ornate wings to soar like an ethereal wreath high, so very high, following that bitter emotion—an emotion met by carnations and roses in the Garden of Eden.

Έρωτα πλημμυρόκαρδε
ποίημα  

Τέσσερης νότες διάλεξα κι έφτιαξα ένα τραγούδι το τραγουδάνε τα πουλιά το τραγουδά ο αγέρας το τραγουδά η αγάπη μου με πόθος και με νάζι.

Έρωτα πλουμιδόκαρδε με τα μεγάλα βέλη μη της τρυπήσεις την καρδιά και κλάψει και δακρύσει· ελα και γίνε σύννεφο φάρμακο και δροσερό νεράκι να της γλυκαίνεις τη φωνή στα σωθικά δροσούλα 

Να ακούω το τραγούδι της μαζί του να ξεχνιέμαι να χάνομαι στα πέλαγα στις μακρινές τις στράτες.

Τέσσερις νότες διάλεξα κι έφτιαξα ένα τραγούδι· το τραγουδούνε τα πουλιά, το τραγουδά ο αγέρας, το τραγουδά η αγάπη μου μες στο γλυκό το δάσος.

Έρωτα πλημμυρόκαρδε, με τα μεγάλα βέλη, μη της τρυπήσεις την καρδιά και κλάψει και δακρύσει· έλα και γίνε σύννεφο, φάρμακο και δροσερό νεράκι, να της γλυκαίνεις τη φωνή και στα σωθικά δροσούλα.

Να ακούω το τραγούδι της, μαζί του να ξεχνιέμαι, να χάνομαι στα πέλαγα, στις μακρινές τις στράτες.

Oh Love, with your heart-piercing arrows, do not wound her heart and make her weep and shed tears; come, become a cloud, a balm, and cool water to sweeten her voice and bring coolness to her very soul.

To hear her song, to lose myself in it, to drift away across the seas and along distant paths.

Σκόνταψα

Σκόνταψα
ποίημα  

Στη χαοτικότητα της αισθητικής

στον ψυχισμό των ανθρώπων, σκόνταψα.

Πέρασα μέσα από τα σπάργανα της λύπης

καταμεσής στου καταγάλανου ουρανού σταύρωσα το βλέμμα,

πίκρανα το δροσερό νερό στο πιθάρι των Δαναΐδων

με τα δάκρυα της καρδιάς μου.

Μάκρυνα σε σύννεφα σκοτεινά.

Μπερδεύονται τα βήματά μου

σε μουσικές ξελογιάστρες ζαλίζετε το μυαλό.

Πέρασα κοντά από επιτυχίες μα σκόνταψα.

Η ομορφιά με σκλάβωσε παράφορα

η φτώχεια με πίκρανε, στα έσχατα του κόσμου σκοτείνιασε

οι κεραυνοί σαν άγρια όνειρα φωτίζουν τη σκέψη

την ώρα του θανάτου φτερουγίζει το άδικο.

Χαμπέρι πού έστειλε μια στιγμή απελπισίας.

Στάλαξε στην καρδιά το αγέρι δροσιά ευχάριστη

Και πήρε το βάρος μακριά, ανάλαφρη η ώρα που είδα τον ήλιο σου.

I Stumbled

A poem

Amidst the chaos of aesthetics

and the human psyche, I stumbled.

I passed through the swaddling clothes of sorrow

and fixed my gaze against the deep blue sky;

I turned the cool water in the Danaids' jar bitter

with the tears of my heart.

I drifted far into dark clouds.

My steps become entangled

in beguiling melodies that make the mind reel.

I brushed past success, yet I stumbled.

Beauty enslaved me with fierce intensity,

poverty embittered me; darkness fell at the world's edge—

lightning bolts, like wild dreams, illuminate the mind,

while injustice flutters its wings at the hour of death.

A message sent by a moment of despair.

The breeze instilled a pleasant coolness in my heart

and lifted the burden away; light was the moment I beheld your sun.

Σκέψη παγωμένη

Σε έψαχνα στις θολές αναμνήσεις.

Στα βαθιά νερά μιας δροσερής θάλασσας.

Κοίταξα την μορφή σου

σωστό αντίγραφο της νεανικότητας μας.

Δεν σε άγγιξα δεν πέρασαν οι στιγμές

Εμείνει η σκέψη παγωμένη

στο συναίσθημα που πρόδιδε η χροιά της φωνής σου.

Έφυγα ντροπιασμένος σε ένα δρόμο χωρίς επιστροφή.

Με πόνεσε που άφησα τόσο χώρο ανάμεσά μας.

Μια πικρή μνήμη στο βάθος της καρδιάς παιδεύει το νου.

Frozen Thought

A Poem

I searched for you amidst hazy memories,

In the deep waters of a cool sea.

I gazed at your form—

A perfect reflection of our youth.

I did not touch you; the moments did not pass.

The thought remained frozen

In the emotion betrayed by the timbre of your voice.

I left, ashamed, on a road of no return.

It pained me to have left such a void between us.

A bitter memory, deep within my heart, torments my mind.

Τα κοράκια

Τα κοράκια

Σκύβουν πάνω στο πτώμα.

Κοράκια τρομαγμένα από την εικόνα.

Μυρωδιά από θειάφι μυρωδιά καμένης σάρκας

Πασαλειμμένο με πίσσα το κορμί της ευδαιμονίας

κι ένοχοι κριμένοι πίσω από το σπίρτο που βάζει φωτιά.

Πως ζουν τα σκουλήκια μέσα στα σάπια νερά του βάλτου.

Πάνω σε ανήλικα παιδάκια πέφτουν τους τραβούν τις σάρκες 

και παιδόφιλουν ασύστολα.

Τα πούπουλα για τους κλέφτες αναλαμβάνουν ρόλο μπερντέ

μα σίγουρα η γάγγραινα πνίγει  την ανάσα,

το έδαφος αργά σταθερά υποχωρεί μαλακώνοντας,

σα στροφή στο γύρο του θανάτου.

The Crows

They bend over the corpse.

Crows startled by the sight.

A stench of sulfur, a stench of burnt flesh;

the body of bliss smeared with pitch,

and the guilty hiding behind the match that lights the fire.

How the worms live in the swamp’s putrid waters.

They descend upon young children, tearing at their flesh,

and molest them without restraint.

The feathers meant for the thieves serve as a screen,

yet gangrene surely stifles the breath;

the ground slowly, steadily gives way, turning soft,

like a turn in the circle of death.

Ήρως

Πολλές μανάδες γέννησαν ήρωες, μα ο χρόνος τους τελείωσε πριν προλάβουν να ολοκληρώσουν το θεάρεστο έργο τους. Άλλωστε, τι είδους ήρωες θα ήταν αν ο σκοπός τους δεν ήταν ξεκάθαρος και απόλυτα ταγμένος στο κοινό καλό; Αλλιώς, πώς να δεχτώ τα μαύρα χάλια αυτού του τόπου; Αυτοί πέθαναν παλεύοντας για την ανάκαμψη του δύσμοιρου κόσμου στο νότιο άκρο της βαλκανικής χερσονήσου, κι ας συμβαίνουν παρόμοια πράγματα και στον υπόλοιπο κόσμο.

Ήρως λοιπόν

Αυτός που ανέχεται την πανταχού παρούσα μητέρα
Αυτός που δουλεύει από ήλιο σε ήλιο
Αυτός που καρτερικά περιμένει να κερδίσει το λαχείο
Αυτός που συγκλονίζεται με την εθνική υπερηφάνεια και γεμίζει φέρετρα
Αυτός που στις εκλογικές μάχες περιμένει μια φιλική κυβέρνηση
Αυτός που καταπίνει ένα κάρο ψέματα, ανάποδα στοιβαγμένα κι αραδιασμένα μπροστά του.

Ένας ήρωας ξέσκεπος, με ηρωικό άσμα, γραμμένος στα κιτάπια του έθνους σαν αριθμός τηλεφώνου σε κατάλογο.

Μα ποιος τους στήνει μπροστά μας, ποιος τους αβαντάρει και τους τοποθετεί στα σχολικά βιβλία; Κάποιοι πονηροί τους εκμεταλλεύονται και στήνουν δουλειές γύρω από αυτούς. Ζυγίζουν τη στιγμή και τον χρόνο και τσουπ, ρεφάρουν τη χασούρα. Ξέρουν την απλότητα του κόσμου και σιδερώνουν το μυαλό του.

Hero

Many mothers gave birth to heroes, yet their time ran out before they could complete their God-pleasing work. After all, what kind of heroes would they be if their purpose weren't clear and utterly dedicated to the common good? Otherwise, how could I accept the wretched state of this land? They died fighting for the recovery of this ill-fated corner at the southern tip of the Balkan Peninsula—even if similar things are happening elsewhere in the world.

A hero, then:

He who tolerates the ever-present mother

He who works from sunrise to sunset

He who patiently waits to win the lottery

He who is stirred by national pride and fills coffins

He who, during election battles, awaits a friendly government

He who swallows a heap of lies, jumbled and spewed out before him.

An exposed hero, the subject of a heroic ballad, yet recorded in the nation’s ledgers merely like a phone number in a directory.

But who parades them before us? Who champions them and places them in school textbooks? Cunning figures exploit them, building lucrative schemes around them. They gauge the moment and the timing, and—*snap*—they recoup their losses. They know the simplicity of the common folk and iron their minds flat.
